MET GALA 2018 - MY FAVOURITES

An invite to the Met Gala is one of the most sought after invitations in the fashion calendar especially as all invites are all personally approved by Vogue royalty, biggie smalls and Anna Wintour. The event is held to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute but the biggest talking point each year is the outfits of the celebrities that walk the red carpet and how in keeping they are with the theme. This year the theme celebrated the relationship between iconic fashion pieces and religious art, an affair that has been going on since the start of time. This years theme was entitled ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Image’. The borderline controversial themed night was hosted by three contrasting but powerful women; Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Human Rights lawyer Amal Clooney, couture iconic Donatello Versace and groundbreaking singer/artist/ designer (the list could go on) Rihanna. Wearing your best at this event isn't just an ask, its necessary - no ones there to play.

VIRGIL ABLOH

As the newly appointed artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh came dressed in an all-white two piece suit with Catholic style stained glass detailing. He paired the suit with cream “UNC” OFF–WHITE x Air Jordan 1s which in my opinion, slightly ruined the summary of the outfit but I still loved the simplicity of the outfit and the OFF-WHITE self promotion.

LENA WAITHE

The Catholic church is an institution who's teachings are fundamentally against the allowance of same-sex marriage. For Lena Waithe to come dressed in an LGBT Carolina Herrera cape was a strong statement and I really respect her balls to use such a highly publicised event to show her feelings to the outdated system.

LANA DEL REY

To be honest, Lana could’ve turned up in a potato sack and I still would've put her on my best dressed list (I love her everyday old hollywood/ lolita style.) She stunned in a Gucci cream-coloured dress with gold accents. Trust Lana to be dramatic and include a sacred heart chest plate with tiny daggers stuck in it, finished off with an ombré blue headpiece with wings. Her ensemble reminded me of renaissance intricate paintings where women are painted ethereal, even the hem of her dress resembled the framing of a painting.

CARDI B

With Jeremy Scott on her arm, Cardi B came dressed to seriously impress in Moschino. Her ruby-encrusted dress matched her crimson lip and her pearl and diamante embellished head piece sat perfectly centrally in her sea of waved hair. Cards B is doing insanely well at the moment and I lover how at her first Met Gala she decided to show that if you work hard enough you can look like a literal queen.

BLAKE LIVELY

As soon as I saw Blake channelling Roman Catholic Mary I vibes in her stunning Atelier Versace dress I knew she’d be on every best dressed list there is, including mine. Clad in $2 million worth of jewellery including a stunning headpiece by Lorraine Schwartz, Christian Louboutin shoes and a dress that took over 600 hours to make, she described the look as her favourite Met look she’d ever worn - I’m not surprised.

CHADWICK BOSEMAN

Described at ‘cape-tivating’ the Met Gala, Chadwick rocked up in a Versace looking dapper. Dazzling in gold shoes and ornate gold crosses, he wore a three piece suit and intricately embellished ivory cape. Usually menswear at the Met Gala isn't usually highly talked about but Chadwick changed the game this time.

Some seriously honourable mentions go to Rihanna in Maison Margela by John Galliano, SZA in Atelier Versace, Winnie Harlow in Tommy Hilfiger, Scarlett Johansson (who I respect for wearing Marchesa as she stood supporting Georgina Chapman, estranged wife of Harvey Weinstein, after the brand suffered a lot since the news of Weinstein’s sexual assaults broke), Zendaya looking like Joan of Arc in Versace, Jennifer Lopez in Balmain, Gigi Hadid in Versace, Stella Maxwell in Moschino and Migos in Versace.
