RITUEL DE FILLE - IDEAS

The idea I have chosen to pursue is based around Greek mythology and the role that quartz and other precious rocks and crystals play within it. The word crystals actually originates from the Greek word ‘krustullos’ which means ice. According to ancient cultural tradition ‘Ancient Greeks believed that crystals such as clear quartz were eternal ice sent from heaven.’ This is where the idea that quartz has healing powers and is why it is often given as a gift. This research led me to looking further into crystals and the stories behind the beliefs associated with them.

I came across another interesting belief about the crystal hematite. Greeks believed that hematite had the power to make them invincible so before each battle, soldiers would rub their bodies with crushed hematite. The black stone is now associated with grounding powers and balancing in your life.

I then looked into amethysts and found a story about the formation of the crystal. A Greek mythological belief was a story about a young virgin girl named Amethyst who angered a drunk Dionysus (the god of wine and rituals). Amethyst became scared and turned to a Goddess for help and was turned into a ‘beautiful white stone’ to protect her. Dionysus became upset about his actions and began to cry into his cup of wine. The cup then spilt on to the stone and the colour covered it until it became the Amethyst recognised today. Its powers were thought to include help with physical ailments, emotional issues and energy healing.

The goddess Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) is associated with rose quartz and was thought to have the power to draw love into your life in the way Aphrodite does. The strong beliefs linked with the powers of crystals and Greek mythology inspired me to create a range of fragrances that reflect the deep thought behind both. Rituel de Fille is associated with all things ritualistic and mystical so an idea like this could branch them into fragrance while maintaining their sense of other worldly experience.

This led me to looking for a perfume brand whose scents are inspired by and based around stories. I looked in to the collection ‘In the garden of good and evil’ by Kilian. The collection is centred around the story of Eve and how she actually held the power when the serpent thought he could wrap himself around her. Her temptress ways remind me of how Aphrodite could control love and how mythology has led us to believe crystals can help alter our fate. The collection will feature a fragrance linked with each crystal and the story that made the crystal come to be.

My primary research of 19 18 - 26 year olds indicated that 280% of them are interested in both Greek mythology and crystals (specifically quartz), 45% were interested in just Greek mythology and 28% were interested in quartz. This led me to develop this idea as there is clearly an enthusiasm for these subjects. When developing the consumer profile for Rituel De Fille I found that they are not currently appealing to anyone massively younger than millennials so introducing a fragrance range that features a subject that is popular amongst a younger consumer market will help them draw in new customers.
